Bruce, thanks for your thoughtful comments. I’m an Albertan and an strong independence supporter. I’m disappointed but not outraged by the Danielle’s announcement for two main reasons.

First, I know many people who are concerned about Canada and Alberta’s place in it, but they’re not prepared to vote “Yes” in a do-or-die independence referendum. They now have an opportunity to participate without feeling they have a gun their head. They can potentially vote “Yes” to having an independence referendum while reserving the right to vote “No” in the referendum itself.

Second, the independence movement is strong but not well organized. The biggest challenge is public engagement. Danielle has promised a summer of public education and debate. This is a HUGE gift to the independence movement, which would otherwise have been scrambling to organize a sophisticated campaign with minimal mainstream media support (although it will still have to do that to a certain extent).

This road is longer, but it may give the issue the space it needs to breath before the all or nothing vote.

PS You may disagree, but Keith Wilson’s view is that an independence referendum could be held early next year.

Thanks again for everything you’re doing to help both Alberta and Canada.

They'll need to replace her ASAP.
